Fare thee well

Today 3 of my friends leave for fun, adventuring, gambling, and loose women. Or at least, 36 hours of driving, and 132 hours of being drunk, eating at buffets, and playing nickle slots..  One friend may never return. But these two will be back next week! For all of their zany adventures, be sure to refresh their pages often.

day ??? – Bedrooms complete.

So.  Its been about 2 weeks since i last updated.  I probably owe you all apologies.

Terribly sorry, things have been busy!

I’m in my room, which now is complete with blinds and a chair and a spare desktop pc, rocking out.  The upstairs bath (non master) is now blue.   Phil has moved into his room, and Amy’s room is done as well.  Tonight I put in some baseboards for her room and my dad put in closet hardware and mom put in caulk along my baseboards. A team effort to be sure, but soon all of the roommates will be in and i’ll be a happy man.

I bought a huge LCD TV last weekend, it will suit my needs perfectly, but unfortunately i have nothing to sit it on. aside from a floor.  So that is what it is sitting on.  My dining room was completely finished…and then a terrible accident, namely my garden hose connection, flooded and seeped under the floorboards in the dining room.  we think we have everything fixed, but i may end up calling the homeowners insurance for the claim.  Hopefully everything works out.

We have one room left to floor, arguably the most important room, the computer room!  Hopefully its finished soon, Phil has a lot of free space he’ll be able to take advantage of all of that soon.

Until next time!

Day 2 – In the house! + pictures!

I am happy to report that the numbering system has restarted – i’m now living in the house, along with my roommate Jason!  Exciting times were had by all as we slowly lugged everything up a flight of stairs, around an unforgiving hallway, and into our respective rooms.  I think the crowning achievement of night 1 was getting Jason’s dresser up the stairs.  Everyone but Jason was convinced it wasn’t going to fit, but when raised vertically, it just barely made it!  I do not yet have the blinds up in my bedroom, so i’m currently waking up with the sun.  This needs to change.

I now have a sweet racing stripe in the main (non-master) upstairs bath.  There had been a hole in the fiberglass that needed to be filled in and covered up.  Rather than color one small section of the shower, the decision was made to make a racing stripe and it actually looks really good, like we meant to do it that way.  My mom picked up a shower curtain that goes nicely with it as well, i’m really impressed at how it came out.

A friend of my parent’s came out and did the carpeting, and we went from being afraid we wouldn’t have enough carpet to having enough left over for a small throw rug.  I’m not quite sure how that happened, but it looks really nice, i’m pleased 🙂

I’m really excited with how well everythings turning out.  There are still two rooms that haven’t been touched yet that need attention, and we may very well overstep our goal of June 1st, but all of the rooms that need to be livable by June 1st I definitely believe will be there.  We’ve got a party tonight to celebrate, hopefully the next post i make isnt with my iphone in a jail cell due to noise disturbances 🙂

Also, picture update time:

Day 44 – Great progress.

So, lots of things happened this weekend that i’m excited about.  I’ve now bought basically everything I was going to as far as repairs to the house go.  The check i’m going to write to my parents will be painful, but we’re almost all done, but its comforting to know we’re almost I got it out of the way, with a 10% off coupon.

We had Mike, Eric, Myla, and PJ over Saturday for sanding baseboards, painting baseboards, nailgunning the baseboards into the wall, and laying laminate in the dining room.  I’m proud to report that due to my father and Mike’s diligence that the dining room was done in a day.  Eric was the bearer of bad news when it came to facts about my nail gun, like I was missing the right connector, and the fact that the 1000 nails that my boss bought were the wrong kind, so now I needed to go out and buy a 1000 nails as replacement.  PJ ripped and pried my carpeting off of my stairs, and helped me nail the baseboards in place.  Also, nailguns are awesome.  The final act before beer o’clock was bringing the sofa into the family room so we could sit down inside and revel in our accomplishments.

Sunday started later, but once it got rolling I feel we got a lot done. Erin and PJ were over almost all day, working on caulking the baseboards and sanding them, respectively.  In retrospect, I did not fully appreciate how much of a job it would be to take care of an entire house’s baseboards.  Oh well.  The carpeting on my stairwell and hallway will be put in tomorrow, and hopefully by Wednesday we’ll be ready to move in!  I’ll keep you posted 😀

Textual Update from the Black Lagoon – Day 41

So I attempted to set the thermostat to 76 on Sunday, much to my dismay on Monday the entire house was somewhere between 80 and 89, depending on whether you were upstairs or downstairs.  Cammarata’s brother came and cleaned my coils and then set my AC to 72.  Regrettably, it froze over once again.  We’re gonna try to get him back out to see if he can fix anything.

We began laying underlayment in the family room Tuesday, and missed out on doing anything Wednesday, and then managed to get half of the family room down yesterday :).  I’m hopeful we’ll get the family room done today, and we can move on to the dining room Saturday.

Celebration — Grout is in! Day 36

So after having two dissapointing nights in a row (Phil’s room took much longer than expected, and we broke like 8 tiles Thursday night grouting in my new fancy door, I was ready for a pick me up.  I got that Saturday, in the form of like 9 hard workers.  My mom, dad, my dad’s boss Bill, and I* knocked out all of the grout work in the house before 1 pm (* – Due to my boisterous complaints about hating to grout, I got to be water boy)!  I had people sanding and painting baseboards, people scraping off the old wax on my toilet, people working on laminate, people filling in holes and chewmarks that needed to get addressed, people drawing on my bathroom walls, Cody came over and helped me with my ceiling fans, baseboards, and talking like  it was an awesome day.  I am proud to announce that we are officially ready to seal in my grout, and consequently ready for my new appliances, and consequently ready to put on baseboards, which puts us in a good position to move in this coming week!!

Allow me to emphasize that a little more.

!!!!!!!

Except apparently my parents are not nearly as optimistic as I am.  So, perhaps not.

I will be sealing my floor’s grout today, and hopefully maybe putting in baseboards?

The flooring, will it never end? – Day 32

So, I went into this weekend having laid out two rows of laminate flooring in Jason’s room.  My dad and I were hoping to lay his room, and then possibly my room also on Saturday, and tackling phil’s room on Sunday.  Turns out, my shit was $.93/sq ft for a reason, these laminate pieces are a pain in the ass to install.  Some combination of being bent over pushing and pulling, hammering, and cursing seemed to be the order of the day.  We managed to finish Jason’s room Saturday afternoon, with Meredith’s help, but it took all day Sunday to get to the point where we were laying pieces of laminate into my hallway, near my two closets.  Monday was extremely slow progress — we cut the far ends of my room, and 2-3 pieces for each master closet.  I am happy to say though that the two rooms that will be used immediately have their flooring, and its on to the less pressing rooms!

It turns out the most difficult pieces of laminate to lay are the first two rows.  Each piece that gets placed has a chance to screw up the piece you laid before, whether it was in that row or (in the case of the second row), you could be screwing up what you just perfected in the first room.  Considering how easy the laminate was supposed to be, the experience has been a little stressful.  I think we’ve got the hang of it though.

Events for this upcoming week include:

Going with Jason to pick up my door

Having my friend’s neighbor install my door

Install the remaining tile that had surrounded the door (we couldn’t lay these until the old door had been ripped out)

Waste (Invest?) Friday getting drunk at Epcot

GROUT on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!  Saturday will be a big day, i’m looking forward to it! (Or, more accurately, looking forward to it being completed 🙂

Thats all that I’ve got…aside from a little room decoration envy.  Jason, if you read this, tell your mother she did an excellent job picking her paint colors.

I think this is day…23?

So, I’ve been kind of sucking on the update thing.  Sorry ’bout that.

I could’ve hand a kind Mexican man do all of my tiling for me for $400, allegedly he would’ve done this in three days.  Instead, my dad and I have been slaving over tape measures, angular grinders, and bags of concrete* mix.  Its been time consuming, but something about not giving away $400 makes me smile.  Plus, I think it looks really nice.  The downside?  We haven’t grouted yet.  When it comes time to grout, I’m going to be wanting to give that man a call, check in hand, I can’t stand doing that.

My cousin came up with a really cool idea for the downstairs bathroom.  Paint everything in black chalkboard paint, and behind the toilet is some plexiglass with some (probably) Batman comic strips, just ripped out for everyones reading pleasure.  Along one of the walls is a 1) Magazine rack with some comics and 2) Chalk, to draw your own comics.  If I can pull it off it should be really cool.  If not, I wasted some money today.

So, I would never have guessed this, but buying all of the shelving for a closet cost me $100.  Sure, the wire closets were probably $20, but when you add up all the supports, clips, caps, suddenly you’ve jumped past the threshold into ridiculousness.  And I still have to cut the damn things and install them myself!

Today I had three visitors.  Matt and Mere stopped by for a good two hours to help out with sanding and pulling nails out of baseboards.  I’m glad they came, we got a lot of baseboards prepped for painting.  After they left, Erin stopped by for a good three hours as I continued the struggle against the baseboards.

So, I ordered my door Thursday finally.  My mom showed me an ad in the paper, literally that Friday exterior doors went on sale at Lowes.  We drove down to lowes, they assured us that we could get the discount, bu tthat we should wait for the door to come in before canceling the order, lest we have tow ait even longer for the door to show up.  Those Lowes employees are a crafty lot.  All I know is I have a bar code for that discount, and there are some comments on my account that affirm that i am owed my $100.

Ok.  Thats enough writing for now.  I’ve got to prepare mentally for laying down my wood flooring.
